Land Ho! Faster than anticipated, Stardust came into sight of Barbados just shy of a 16 day passage across the Atlantic Ocean. Despite thoroughly enjoying the trip, I'd have to admit being excited to finally be at anchor and walk on some hard ground instead of our rocking and pitching home of two weeks. Just like a good-luck omen as well, my several-day dry spell of fishing was cured with a sunrise wahoo, and later that morning two yellowfin tunas, all around 5 pounds.
Barbados proved itself to be a worth-while stopover. At the north end of the island near Port St. Charles, nearby Speightstown was quite small with few options for stocking up on provisions, and what was there was more expensive than I could have imagined. A single roma tomato, individually packaged, cost about $1.30 US. What about a small box of plain old Cheerios? That'll be $10 US, please. Safe to say, at those prices we were happy to scrape by with our existing supply on board with the hopes of traveling to a cheaper island soon.
After spending most of the week to rest and recover, the decision was made to move on to St. Lucia, where from there the other Caribbean islands were short day hops apart. The 95-mile trip from Barbados had us lifting the hook at 1am to make it to Rodney Bay before sundown.
